Communicating for Health in Appalachia by Translating Science (CHATS) Core

Overview

The CHATS Core provides specialized health communication services that translate research into practice using communication science and health behavior theory to accelerate the impact of health research. The CHATS Core is founded from the innovative research of the CHATS Lab, and offers a collection of services designed to shorten the knowledge translation timeline, particularly in rural communities, with a goal of improving health outcomes. The CHATS Core team provides specialized services to researchers and health professionals to amplify their work, ensuring that it reaches the people and communities that need it most.

Services

  • Initial Consultation: Partnering with the CHATS Core begins with a 60-minute initial consultation to learn more about the unique needs of a project. Service needs are determined through this consultation.
  • Coaching & Communication Strategy: The CHATS Core combines deep insights into rural populations with expertise in applied communication, knowledge translation, and dissemination science along with integrating new tools like social listening to better understand conversations that can inform an effective outreach plan.
  • Development of Knowledge Products: The CHATS Core turns research into actionable knowledge products, like toolkits, moving research from the bookshelf into the hands of the intended audience driving real-world impact.
  • Creative Service: The CHATS Core offers video, audio, and graphic design services that bring research to life and make it more accessible and meaningful to the intended audience.
  • CHATS Academy: The CHATS Core offers customized training opportunities in health communication, social media, and dissemination science. Current offerings include: Relationship-Centered Communication for Healthcare Professionals; Using Dissemination Science to Strengthen the Research to Practice Pipeline; Social and Behavioral Change Communication; Understanding Appalachian Culture to Support Health Research and Practice; Creating a Professional Social Profile for Health Professionals.
