WVSMA launches physician leadership program

The West Virginia State Medical Association has announced the launch of Physician LEADS West Virginia, which is the state’s first annual year-long physician leadership program.

Physician Leadership, Education, Advancement and Development Series (LEADS) West Virginia is a program designed to better train West Virginia physicians on becoming leaders. The program focusses on building leadership abilities in the fast-paced healthcare landscape and developing a growth-oriented mindset with West Virginia physicians.

“More than ever, physicians are needed in leadership roles with the skills and experience to lead complex and ever-changing environments. Making the transition from accomplished physician to physician-leader takes more than critical clinical skills—it requires a fundamental shift in thinking,” Shafic Sraj, M.D., MBA said. Dr. Sraj is the program director for Physician LEADS West Virginia, and an associate professor for the WVU Department of Orthopaedics.

Physician LEADS West Virginia consists of four weekends in venues across the state that progress along four leadership tracks: Personal Leadership, Organizational Leaders, Healthcare Environment and Change and Agility of Leaders.

“As it has for more than a century and a half, West Virginia State Medical Association is taking the lead in providing the training physicians need to practice in today’s ever-changing health care environment and the communities we serve,” WVSMA President and WVU Department of Pediatrics Assistant Professor Lisa Costello, M.D., MPH said.

Dr. Costello added that Physician LEADS West Virginia is designed by physicians, for physicians.

“It is robust, flexible and the first of its kind in our state to bring physicians together from across West Virginia to learn how better to lead and collaborate and move the Mountain State forward,” Costello added.

Physicians interested in applying, or anyone desiring additional information on the program can visit the Physician LEADS West Virginia website or reach out to info@wvsma.org.
