Stacie Honaker appointed risk manager/privacy officer for WVU Health Sciences

Stacie Honaker's photoStacie D. Honaker, J.D., has been named the risk manager and privacy officer for WVU Health Sciences Center. She replaces Sandra Price who recently retired after more than 30 years with the University.

Honaker will be responsible for a variety of risk management and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability (HIPAA) compliance efforts, such as monitoring medical malpractice claims and lawsuits, investigating HIPAA privacy issues, addressing patient complaints and concerns and providing support to units with HIPAA/privacy issues.

The Risk Management and Privacy Office oversees medical malpractice insurance coverage for Health Sciences Center faculty, residents and students and verifies insurance and provides claims histories for healthcare providers. The Office also manages the subpoena process for Health Sciences employees, providing assistance when needed and facilitating contact between healthcare providers and other members of the legal community.

Honaker previously served as the assistant risk manager and privacy analyst for WVU Health Sciences. Honaker has prior work experience with a local law firm representing and assisting physicians, hospitals and other healthcare providers in connection with medical negligence claims, licensing board complaints and other compliance and healthcare issues. She has experience working with defendants in a variety of civil litigation claims, including medical negligence, premises liability and general negligence. In addition, she clerked for the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals during a summer assignment.

Honaker is a 2004 graduate of the WVU College of Law and was a member of the West Virginia Law Review, serving as associate editor in 2003 and symposium editor in 2004.
