WVU Rural PRO is a comprehensive program designed to elevate professional development for students in WVU's Institute for Community and Rural Health (ICRH) Student Programs. This initiative provides innovative training and collaborative experiences to equip students with essential skills for success in their future careers.
WVU Rural PRO Program Description
WVU Rural PRO consists of three key events, each focused on a different aspect of professional and personal development. These events provide a blend of in-person workshops and virtual sessions, ensuring accessibility and flexibility for participating students:
November 6, 2025 Kickoff (In-Person 6pm to 8pm Erickson Alumni Center): A dinner and workshop focused on etiquette, professional communication, networking, and building a strong personal brand both in-person and online. Key learning objectives include: dining etiquette, mastering professionalism and communication skills in clinical and academic settings, virtual professionalism (Zoom etiquette, digital body language, etc.), crafting professional emails, and managing your digital image.
January 8, 2026 (Zoom Workshop 6pm to 7pm): Addressing wellness, burnout, mindfulness, and the importance of peer support. Topics covered: burnout prevention strategies, self-care techniques, mindfulness practices, and cultivating a peer support culture.
February 27-28, 2026 'Beyond the Books' Weekend Event (In-Person Erickson Alumni Center):
A two-day, in-person event incorporating networking opportunities, a career fair, mock interviews, and a series of targeted workshops. This event will be broken into two separate series - with one focused more on MD graduate students, and the other geared towards other healthcare disciplines. Workshop topics include: CV development, understanding contracts, negotiation skills, AI in healthcare, leveraging LinkedIn, financial planning, and navigating career roadmaps.

1. WVU Institute for Community and Rural Health students participating in:
- RUSH (Rural Undergraduate Shadowing in Healthcare) Program - requirement
- PREP (Pipeline Rural Education Program) - requirement
- Rural Health Interest Group Leadership Council - requirement
- WV AHEC Rural Community Health Scholars - optional
- CARRS (Community and Rural Rotations Support) Program - optional
- WV Nourish Fellowship Students - optional
