Healthcare is Human Exhibit Opening

The WVU Humanities Center and its partners, including Art in the Libraries and the William A. Neal Museum of the Health Sciences, in collaboration with WVU Health Sciences Center, invite you to the opening of a yearlong exhibit on September 25, 2023, from 3:00-5:00 PM at the Health Science Center Pylons.

Healthcare Is Human is a health humanities project created by Ryan McCarthy, MD of WVU Medicine at the Berkeley County Medical Center (BMC). With burnout looming and the COVID-19 pandemic as a catalyst, Dr. McCarthy’s project created a sense of community at BMC, and instilled resilience in healthcare workers, including not only doctors and nurses, , but also hospital chefs, ambulance drivers, security guards, cafeteria workers, janitors, and others—in other words, those who often work behind the scenes. This inclusive approach provides a fuller, richer portrait of the work that happened inside the BMC during COVID and creates an innovative way to incorporate storytelling in multiple forms in order to help stave off healthcare professional burnout, build community, and connect with the humanistic parts of healthcare.
