WVU School of Nursing students invited to study abroad, scholarships available
West Virginia University School of Nursing students have a number of opportunities to study abroad, which can expand their understanding of global health.
Study Abroad Experiences
Study in London
Dana Friend and Susan Pinto will lead “United Kingdom: Healthcare and Nursing in London,” a study abroad experience this spring open to pre-nursing, nursing and public health majors. During NSG 293, which is 1 credit, students will spend the spring semester meeting to discuss the trip experience and gain a working knowledge of healthcare and nursing in London.
The course will culminate with a trip to London from May 22-28, where students can speak with a registered nurse who can share insights into Britain's healthcare system. Students will learn and observe techniques during the early history of medicine in England and have a guided tour of the Florence Nightengale Museum and the nursing school she founded.
Additionally, students will take a medical walking tour visiting sites such as the Royal College of Physicians the first modern birth control clinic, as well as visit a museum dedicated to medical artifacts and original artwork. Students can also enjoy enjoying cultural sites such as Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, St. Paul's Cathedral, Piccadilly Circus and Hyde Park.

Study in Brazil
An informational session about a study abroad opportunity in Brazil will be held Oct. 19 at 4 p.m. in BMRF-101, Erma Byrd Annex.
Amizade’s Multilateral Partnership for Interprofessional Education (MPIE) is a semester-long program, held in the spring only. The month-long interprofessional rotation, set for March 27-April 23, is open to graduate students in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, public health and allied health programs.
A two-week long, faculty-led program, which is geared toward undergraduate students but open to all students, will be held in June.

Study in Cyprus
Students participating in the month-long summer study abroad program in Nicosia, Cyprus, will be visiting community hospitals and clinics in addition to covering comparative healthcare contexts in a classroom setting. The application deadline is April 1, 2023. Decisions are made on a rolling basis.

Scholarship Opportunities
Nancy Sanders Memorial Grants
Applications for the Nancy Sanders Memorial Student Travel and Faculty Research Abroad Grants are open now through Oct. 31.
Up to 10 student travel awards of $2,000 each are available for the academic year, as well as one faculty global pilot research award of $10,000 is available.
The travel awards honor Nancy Sanders, who was instrumental in establishing WVU’s highly successful and nationally distinguished Tropical Medicine Course.

School of Nursing Study Abroad & Global Outreach
In recent years, School of Nursing students traveled to communities across Asia, Africa, Europe and both Central and South America, visiting local hospitals and clinics to learn about various community health issues that affect those areas while being exposed to new cultures and lifestyles around the world.
Nursing students are invited to apply for one of four $2,000 scholarships now through Nov. 29. The scholarships, available for the Spring/Summer 2023 academic year, are open to any currently enrolled undergraduate BSN or MSN student in good academic standing.

Global Affairs: University Break Travel Awards
WVU students can apply for up to $500 in funding to participate in a WVU Faculty-led program over spring break, Thanksgiving break or winter break.
Students will be selected based on a combination of need, academic success and travel experience. Students without previous international experience will be considered, as University programming is a great way for students to gain their first international travel experience with a full-time faculty leader and a guided academic itinerary.
