Urgent Apple security update for WVU Medicine employees

WVU Medicine requests all employees to update their personal Apple devices to iOS 15.6.1 and Mac Computers (mac OS Monterey) to 12.5.1 immediately.

Personal Devices (such as iPhone, iPad, Mac computers) will no longer be allowed to access Office 365 resources after 09/09/2022 without the update.

How does this affect you?

  • This security vulnerability allows “bad actors” to take administrative control over your Apple device and gain access to work applications (example: Microsoft Teams, Microsoft One-Note, Microsoft Outlook Email).
  • On your personal devices the bad actor could get pictures, documents, personal email and applications.

What is happening?

  • Apple has released a new security update for iOS operating systems. The following devices allow the software upgrade: iPhone 6s and later, iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 2 and later, iPad 5th generation and later, iPad mini 4 and later, and iPod touch (7th generation).
  • If your Apple Device is older than these models, WVU Medicine IT strongly recommends upgrading your device as soon as possible to remain secure. After 09/09/2022 devices without this update will not have access to WVU Medicine resources for Office 365 such as Email, Teams and OneNote.

When did this occur?

  • This iOS update was released on August 17, 2022.

How to update (iPhone and iPad):

  • To check your version on your Apple device:
    • Go to “Settings”
    • Click on “Account Name” (top of menu)
