Train to become a certified tobacco treatment specialist

The West Virginia University School of Dentistry, in cooperation with the WVU Health Sciences Center Office of Interprofessional Education, will hold its third Certified Tobacco Treatment Training Program from May 20 to May 22, 2020 in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Seventeen experts from various healthcare specialties will discuss a variety of topics including:

• evidence-based strategies to assist patients and clients interested in tobacco cessation,
• research regarding the electronic cigarette,
• smokeless tobacco,
• and vaping products that have entered the market and have been linked to lung injuries and death. (The CDC reports 52 deaths in 26 states and the District of Columbia as of December 10, 2019.)

This three-day course is for professionals in the fields of medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, public health, social work, respiratory therapy and addiction counseling.

This program is one of 22 national and international Tobacco Treatment Training Programs certified by the Council for Tobacco Treatment Training Programs (CTTTP).

The National Certificate in Tobacco Treatment Practice is a collaborative effort among the Association for Tobacco Use and Dependence (ATTUD), the Council for Tobacco Treatment Training Programs (CTTTP), and the Association for Addiction Professionals (NAADAC).

One requirement for achieving national certification includes the successful completion of an accredited training program such as the School of Dentistry’s CTTTP.
