From anatomy courses to patient care, SADHA reports busy semester

WVU dental hygiene students providing care to patients

Dental hygiene students at West Virginia University School of Dentistry are back in the swing of things. Jordan Clark, president of the WVU chapter of the Student American Dental Hygiene Association (WVU SADHA), shared the following update for alumni and friends.

Be on the lookout for sophomore students carrying around miniature skulls while studying head and neck anatomy. Junior and senior students can often be found calling patients to schedule appointments or on the clinic floor providing their patients with personalized, professional care.

As always, junior and senior dental hygiene students are seeking new patients! Students are in the large clinic Monday-Thursday, with morning and afternoon availability. If you know someone interested in scheduling an appointment with a dental hygiene student, please contact the school at 304-293-6208. Information about the procedures we offer is on our website.

The junior and senior SADHA members have been busy preparing for the WVU School of Dentistry’s first FREE oral cancer screening and awareness event. This event is sponsored by the Academy of General Dentistry Foundation (AGDF). The “Catch it Early: Oral Cancer Screening and Awareness Event” will be held on September 25, 2021.

Senior students will be providing one-on-one education to community members about topics such as:

  • Visiting the dentist regularly, which allows for oral cancer to be caught in early stages
  • Reducing the risk factors for oral cancer
  • The HPV vaccine’s role in prevention of oropharyngeal cancer
  • Tips on how to perform an at-home 2-minute oral cancer screening using a bathroom mirror
  • Tobacco cessation strategies and resources

We are also happy to announce that on September 3, 2021, two class representatives and a historian were elected for the freshman class. Those individuals are as follows:

  • Freshmen Class Representatives: Lauren Burke and Rebecca Good
  • Freshmen Historian: Grace Dempsey

In case you missed it, the 2021-2022 Welcome Back Orientation Picnic kicked off the new academic year on August 17, 2021, at St. Mary’s Church Pavilion in Star City, West Virginia. This annual event gives SADHA members an opportunity to bond with their fellow classmates and faculty prior to classes beginning. The event was full of academic information, fun activities, and picnic food. The only thing missing from the event was our program chair, Ms. Funk. We are SO glad that she is back on campus with us!
