Davisson wins Rosalind Franklin Society award for research

Laura Davisson, M.D., a professor in the West Virginia University Department of Medicine was recently recognized by the Rosalind Franklin Society who awarded her a Special Award in Science for her manuscript “Building a Medical–Surgical Obesity Center in an Academic Health System: Lessons Learned.”

The annual award is presented to outstanding peer-reviewed research by women and underrepresented minorities in STEM.

RFS, in partnership with Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., launched the award for the best paper by a woman or under-represented minority in science in each of the publisher’s more than 100 peer-reviewed journals to highlight the important contributions of these scientists and provide role models and mentors for younger scientists following in their footsteps.

"I am honored to accept the Rosalind Franklin Society award for our manuscript on building an obesity treatment program, which has become a model for others. This work was made possible by the unwavering support of WVU Medicine and the Department of Internal Medicine, who recognized early the importance of comprehensive obesity treatment," she said.

"The interest in this paper shows that others are increasingly seeing obesity as one of the most important chronic diseases and are looking to us for guidance in starting their own programs. Our medical weight management program has grown since its inception, thanks to our dedicated team members and collaborators. I look forward to publishing a follow-up paper to describe our progress and report our outcomes," Davisson concluded.

The complete list of award winners is available on the RFS website.
