Black History Month: Student-Organized Talk Series (Additional Events Added)

"Reaching Back, Pulling Forward"

In celebration of Black History Month, the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) and the Multicultural Association of Students in Healthcare (MASH) are organizing a talk series called "Reaching Back, Pulling Forward."

The lecture series is inspired by the events of the past summer (sweeping Black Lives Matter protests across the globe for the murder of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor) and an appeal for diversity, inclusion and equity in today's healthcare and educational setting.

The events will reflect the work that has been done and the work that still needs to be done in order to tackle the system of white supremacy, racial discrimination and socio-economic disparities.

The first event, "Health Equity," will be held Feb. 1 at 5:30 p.m.

The speaker will be Dr. Kameron Matthews (M.D., J.D., FAAFP), a former SNMA National President who serves on committees of the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC). She also served as the 2018-2020 National Academy of Medicine James C. Puffer/American Board of Family Medicine fellow. Having obtained her BA from Duke University in 2000, she went on to the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine while simultaneously obtaining a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Chicago School of Law. She is currently a Chief Medical Officer at the United States Veterans Administration.

The second event in the series, "Mis-steps and Mends in Medical Education: Lessons from an MD Curriculum Thread Director," will be held Feb. 16 at 5:30 p.m.

The speaker will be Dr. Linda Nield (M.D.), the pediatric residency program director from 2010-2015 at the WVU School of Medicine. She is currently the Chair of the Medical Student and Resident Section of the WV American Academy of Pediatrics. She also serves as the Assistant Dean of Admissions and has served as the Director of the Diversity, Inclusion, and Healthcare Disparities curriculum thread since 2015.
