Beckley Campus junior nursing students participate in Day of Service at Salvation Army
WVU School of Nursing Beckley Campus junior students recently volunteered during a Day of Service with the Salvation Army. The students dedicated their time and skills to assist with various initiatives, including distributing food, organizing donations, and engaging with community members in need.
This hands-on experience not only allowed them to contribute to the mission of the Salvation Army but also reinforced the importance of compassion and service in the nursing profession.
"The students found immense fulfillment in supporting those less fortunate, and their enthusiasm and commitment were evident throughout the day," said lecturer Kelley Coleman. "By stepping up to serve, they not only advanced the mission of the Salvation Army but also deepened their understanding of the social determinants of health that affect our communities."
In total, the group made 393 sandwiches, 142 food bags, 100 snack bags, maintained the coffee/lemonade/water drink area, and served 75 hot meals.
The students also helped clean and organize both storage areas, both walk in coolers, check dates and rotate food items, clean and sanitize the kitchen at the end of the experience, and prepared all the food for the hot meal.
Additionally, the students offered free blood pressure, pulse, oxygen, and eye screenings to the community members.
