School of Public Health to co-sponsor tick check at Morgantown dog parks
The WVU School of Public Health is partnering with BOPARC to conduct a “Paws and Claws” tick check from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 27. The event will occur at Krepps Park in Suncrest and Stanley Spot Dog Park, which is located downtown.
'Collaboration and Team Science' presentation set for June 19
The West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute (WVCTSI) will host a guest seminar with L. Michelle Bennett, Ph.D., chief science officer at the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. She will present "Collaboration and Team Science" at 9:30 a.m. Friday, June 19, in room 2940A, Health Sciences Center North.
Hodder to lead expanded clinical and translational efforts at WVU
Sally L. Hodder, M.D., has been named associate vice president for clinical and translational research at West Virginia University, according to Clay Marsh, M.D., vice president and executive dean for health sciences. Hodder currently serves as the director of the West Virginia Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (WVCTSI), a statewide health research organization at WVU.
Dr. Sally Hodder to lead Mountains of Excellence: Addressing Health Disparities
Sally Hodder, M.D., director of the West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute (WVCTSI) and professor of medicine in the WVU School of Medicine, has been named the new faculty leader of the WVU Mountains of Excellence: Addressing Health Disparities.
WVU creates new doctoral degree in clinical and translational science
The new doctor of philosophy degree in clinical and translational science will consist of courses guided by a highly flexible framework tailored to each student's interest and background. Students will also conduct research in basic, population and clinical sciences. The degree will require 99 credit hours to complete.
WVU Health Sciences Center welcomes first student from Ukrainian university
Oleh Bodilovskyi is the first student from the National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” (NTUU “KPI”) to visit the WVU Health Sciences Center through the memorandum of understanding between the two universities that took effect this January.
Biostatistics faculty publishes a New Model in the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society: Series C
D. Leann Long, PhD, assistant professor in the WVU Department of Biostatistics, has published a new statistical model for correlated count data containing more zeroes than expected, commonly known in biostatistics as ‘zero-inflated’ count data. Dr. Long’s work is now available online in Journal of the Royal Statistical Society: Series C (Applied Statistics). For many fields of research, the new marginalized zero-inflated Poisson model with random effects provides more meaningful interpretations than traditional methods for count data with excess zeroes.
Just Desserts fundraiser to benefit WVU brain cancer research and patients
Attendees of the Fourth Annual Just Desserts fundraiser will satisfy their sweet tooth while supporting brain cancer research and patient comfort at the West Virginia University Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center. Hosted by the Let the Journey Begin Committee at the Cancer Center, Just Desserts will be held on Saturday, May 2, at St. John Parish Hall in Morgantown. Doors open at 7 p.m. Admission is $30 per person if purchased before the event and $35 per person at the door.
WVCTSI director to visit Practice-Based Research Network partner sites
With warmer spring weather comes road trips, and Sally Hodder, M.D., director of the West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute (WVCTSI), is hitting the road to learn more about partner sites in the West Virginia Practice-Based Research Network (WVPBRN).
Grants available for early career academic scientists at WVU
Each grant is for five years and will range from $100,000 to $400,000 per year, based on external funding and need. The awardee’s institution will be given an additional 20 percent of the yearly grant for indirect (or administrative) costs. WVU is one of the eligible institutions.
