The NCI Experimental Therapeutics (NExT) pipeline

The NExT program focuses on translating biomedical research into effective (new) therapies for cancer by providing Discovery and Development resources to bring new agents to the clinic. NExT unites the drug development expertise of the Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis (DCTD) with the dynamic research programs and state-of-the art facilities of the Center for Cancer Research (CCR) at the NIH Clinical Center—the world’s largest hospital devoted exclusively to clinical research.

WV Cancer Plan 2016-2020 to be released Jan. 27

The West Virginia Cancer Plan 2016-2020, a statewide blueprint for cancer prevention and control, will be released to the public at the Culture Center Great Hall in Charleston at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 27.  The plan is a consensus-based, strategic document for public and private sector cancer control activities aimed at reducing the impact of cancer in communities throughout West Virginia.  It was prepared byMountains of Hope, West Virginia’s Cancer Coalition -- made up of more than 130 community-based organizations, research and academic institutions, public and private agencies, coalitions, voluntary associations, patient advocacy groups, and other cancer-related organizations.  The WVU Cancer Institute is represented on the Coalition by several members of the Cancer Prevention and Control unit.

Going global for health education

Beginning in January 2016, faculty and students of the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy will gain a new global opportunity for education and collaboration.

WVU assists police with overdose drug

West Virginia University is taking action to help West Virginia police officers assist people who have overdosed on prescription opioid pain medications or illegal opiate drugs such as heroin. Naloxone is a drug that reverses the effects of opiate and opioid drug overdoses. The WVU Law Enforcement Naloxone Project will provide law enforcement agencies with the necessary training and procedures to administer this drug in emergency situations to persons incapacitated from an opioid or opiate overdose.

WV STEPS open house set for Dec. 4

The expanded and improved David and Jo Ann Shaw Center for Simulation Training and Education for Patient Safety – WV STEPS – will welcome visitors to an open house from 2:30-4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4. The center is located on the third floor of Health Sciences South.
