Gee welcomes new cancer researchers to WVU

Earlier this year when Mary J.C. Hendrix was named president of Shepherd University, she had a critical decision to make: To shut down her research laboratory at Northwestern University or relocate her groundbreaking cancer research closer to Shepherd. The answer came in a unique partnership with West Virginia University, a major R1 research university 150 miles to the west of Shepherd. Thanks to sophisticated Skype technology, Hendrix and her laboratory are able to resume daily research interactions.

WVU recruiting six new quantitative neuroscientists

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – WVU’s Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute (BRNI) has launched a national search for six scientists to form the backbone of a new push into quantitative neuroscience – an interdisciplinary approach to studying how the nervous system processes information within the human brain.

School of Nursing professor to speak at national roundtable

Jennifer Mallow, PhD, FNP-BC, assistant professor at the WVU School of Nursing and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholar, will participate in a roundtable discussion on genomics and precision health at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine on Nov. 9 in Washington, D.C.   

Multi-university team finds possible mechanism to suppress skin cancer metastasis

New research, published this week in Laboratory Investigation (Nature Publishing Group) may hold the key a challenging problem in cancer treatment. The investigation was an international effort led by Mary J.C. Hendrix, president of Shepherd University; her laboratory partners at West Virginia University, Richard Seftor, Elisabeth Seftor and Naira Margaryan; and a team of collaborators in Chicago, Boston and Australia. The research team studies a protein long known to be active in embryonic development, called Nodal, that also has a critical role in aggressive human cancer.

West Virginia one of 7 states participating in a National Governor’s Association Learning Laboratory on prevention of heroin and fentanyl overdoses

A team from West Virginia—with members representing Governor Tomblin’s office, the Bureaus of Public Health and Behavioral Health and Health Facilities in the WV Department of Health and Human Resources, the WV Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety, and the WVU Injury Control Research Center—recently traveled to Newport, Rhode Island to participate in a Learning Lab sponsored by the National Governor’s Association (NGA). The purpose of the Learning Laboratory was for states to share information on overdose prevention efforts, and to learn about Rhode Island’s model overdose prevention program.  The NGA Learning Lab—entitled “State Strategies for Reducing Overdose and Deaths from Heroin and Illicit Fentanyl”—also included a team from the host state Rhode Island, along with teams from Alabama, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.  Members of the WV Team for the 2-day Learning Lab included:  Joseph Garcia, Director of Legislative Affairs in Governor Tomblin’s Office; John Yauch, Director of the WV Violence and Injury Prevention Program in the BPH; Kimberly Walsh, Deputy Commissioner of the BBHHF; Charity Sayre, Justice Reinvention Coordinator in the WV Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety; Matthew Izzo, Administrator of the WV Office of the Chief Medical Examiner; and Herb Linn, Deputy Director of the West Virginia University Injury Control Research Center.

WVU’s food bank to open second location, The Rack II@HSC

West Virginia University Health Sciences will soon open “The Rack II@HSC,” WVU Health Sciences’ Campus Food Bank, to assist with campus-wide efforts to address the growing population of homeless and/or hungry employees/students.    

Health Sciences researchers work published in Nature Microbiology

Two WVU Health Sciences researchers recently had their work published online in Nature Microbiology, a scientific journal that publishes exceptional research from across the field of microbiology. The manuscript is entitled “Spirochaete flagella hook proteins self-catalyse a lysinoalanine covalent crosslink for motility.”
