West Virginia’s demand for high quality mental health services outpaces the number of providers and hours in the day. The telepsychiatry program at WVU Healthcare’s Chestnut Ridge Center is a growing program that's building deep connections in communities across the state daily.

Interdisciplinary approach aids pregnant women with opioid addiction

Chestnut Ridge Center treats five groups of pregnant women or women who have recently delivered, with 10-12 outpatients in each, for opioid dependence. The WVU Department of Behavioral Medicine uses an interdisciplinary approach, collaborating with representatives from obstetrics, pediatrics, lactation, and pharmacy to improve patient care.

Portable PET helmet captures images of the human brain in motion

Julie Brefczynski-Lewis, PhD, is part of a collaborative team of scientists using a portable brain scanner to study the human brain in motion. She is the lead neuroscientist of the WVU team in the BRAIN Initiative, launched by President Obama in 2013 as a national effort to equip researchers with the fundamental support necessary for treating a wide variety of brain disorders.

WVU launches undergraduate degree in public health

Students at West Virginia University will have a new option starting next spring – an undergraduate program aimed at launching them into careers in public health. A new Bachelor of Science program was approved June 5 by the Board of Governors.

Seventeen Days: new mobile app educates teens on risky sexual behavior

Teenagers, parents, educators and clinicians will have a new tool to help adolescents make more informed decisions about their sexual behavior. “Seventeen Days,” a mobile app based on the interactive movie of the same name, will be available at no cost on iPhone, iPad and Android devices beginning Thursday, June 4.

Hodder to lead expanded clinical and translational efforts at WVU

Sally L. Hodder, M.D., has been named associate vice president for clinical and translational research at West Virginia University, according to Clay Marsh, M.D., vice president and executive dean for health sciences. Hodder currently serves as the director of the West Virginia Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (WVCTSI), a statewide health research organization at WVU.
