State public health commissioner and health officer Rahul Gupta to speak at Behavioral Health Grand Rounds
West Virginia Commissioner of the Department of Health and Human Resources, Bureau for Public Health, and State Health Officer, Rahul Gupta, MD, MPH, FACP, will present at the Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry's Grand Rounds on November 2 at 1:00 p.m. in HSC classroom 2118. He will be speaking about the state of mental health in West Virginia. CME and CEU's provided.
WVU’s Women on Wellness retreat set for Nov. 12 in Greenbrier County
The annual Greenbrier County Women on Wellness (WOW) retreat, in partnership with The Greenbrier WOW Community Partnership planning committee and the National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health at West Virginia University (CoE), will be held on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Rainelle Elementary School.
WVU recruiting six new quantitative neuroscientists
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – WVU’s Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute (BRNI) has launched a national search for six scientists to form the backbone of a new push into quantitative neuroscience – an interdisciplinary approach to studying how the nervous system processes information within the human brain.
New restaurant coming to the Market at WVU Health Sciences Center
The Market, the new cafe located in the Health Sciences Center, will be changing out EiO & the Hive Restaurant and will be opening Panini Pete’s after Thanksgiving of this year. The change comes after seeing the strong interests for an extended menu featuring salads, sandwiches, and soups. The change will happen over Thanksgiving Break.

Second-year students at the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy visited West Preston School on Thursday, Oct. 27, to discuss the dangers of substance and prescription drug abuse.

Multi-university team finds possible mechanism to suppress skin cancer metastasis
New research, published this week in Laboratory Investigation (Nature Publishing Group) may hold the key a challenging problem in cancer treatment. The investigation was an international effort led by Mary J.C. Hendrix, president of Shepherd University; her laboratory partners at West Virginia University, Richard Seftor, Elisabeth Seftor and Naira Margaryan; and a team of collaborators in Chicago, Boston and Australia. The research team studies a protein long known to be active in embryonic development, called Nodal, that also has a critical role in aggressive human cancer.
WVU School of Medicine names Dr. Robert Johnstone chair of Anesthesiology

WVU Cancer Institute receives unique funding to improve care for lung cancer survivors
The Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation has committed $25MM in new funding to Vice President Joe Biden’s Cancer Moonshot Initiative to address health care disparities in cancer care and support. At today’s White House event, the Foundation announced new partnerships with the WVU Cancer Institute and three additional partners to develop, implement, and evaluate an innovative model of comprehensive, coordinated care to better meet the needs of lung cancer survivors and their caregivers.
Nationally recognized lifestyle medicine expert joins WVU Medicine’s Eastern Campus
Diabetes and endocrinology expert, Emma B. Morton-Eggleston, M.D., M.P.H., was recently named chief of diabetes and obesity prevention and co-director of the WVU Center for Lifestyle Medicine in the West Virginia University School of Medicine.
