Professor weighs in on opioid and other drug overdoses and poisonings
Suicides are often misclassified as accidental or undetermined – especially when they involve opioid and other drug overdoses and poisonings. Accurate classification is crucial to public health surveillance, which drives resource allocation for prevention research, policy and practice. Dr. Ian Rockett, professor in the WVU School of Public Health’s Epidemiology department, is part of a collaborative team of experts brought together by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to address suicide classification issues in instances involving opioid overdoses.
WVU School of Medicine names Sarwari as new chair of Medicine
Arif Sarwari, M.D., infectious diseases specialist, has been named to lead the Department of Medicine. Dr. Sarwari has been serving as interim chair of the department for more than a year and administering the day-to-day operational management and oversight.
Health Sciences community invited to West Virginia Writers’ Workshop
Several events at this year’s West Virginia Writers’ Workshop, July 20-23 at WVU, are focused on the role of writing and storytelling in health. Presenters include narrative medicine faculty from several campuses across the U.S., along with the leaders of an expressive writing program for patients at the WVU Cancer Institute. Health sciences faculty, staff and students are invited to participate in some or all of the Workshop.
WVU cancer researcher participates in study that shows promising treatments for certain patients with advanced colorectal cancer
A group of cancer researchers, including Richard Goldberg, M.D., director of the WVU Cancer Institute, released a study today in the Journal of the American Medical Association comparing the results of combinations of chemotherapy delivered with targeted therapy drugs in the treatment of people with advanced colorectal cancer who had not received prior drug treatment for their advanced disease.

The West Virginia University School of Medicine recently welcomed a new class of 138 resident physicians to the graduate medical education program.
WVU leader named fellow of national nursing association
Dr. Toni DiChiacchio, assistant dean of the West Virginia University School of Nursing, has been named a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) for her outstanding contributions to clinical practice, research, education and policy. She will join an elite class of nurse practitioners during the induction ceremony at the annual conference on June 22, 2017, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
WVU School of Public Health dean to participate in congressional briefing on opioid epidemic
The West Virginia University School of Public Health will be among five schools in the Appalachian region to brief members of Congress in Washington, D.C. Monday (June 19) to share their findings and unique approaches to address the opioid epidemic. Dean Jeffrey Coben, M.D., will participate in “The Opioid Epidemic: Findings from Public Health Research Experts” to represent the West Virginia University School of Public Health, along with leaders from the University of Pittsburgh, University of Kentucky, The Ohio State University and East Tennessee State University.
