WV KIDS COUNT to release report on wellbeing of children and families in West Virginia
WV KIDS COUNT, in partnership with WVU Medicine Children’s and the WVU Rockefeller School of Public Policy and Politics, will hold an event on April 23 at noon at the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute’s Bruce McClymonds Conference Center to release the second in a series of six issue briefs on the wellbeing of children and families in West Virginia.

Dr. Suresh Madhavan to receive AACP’s prestigious Dawson Award for Excellence in Patient Care Research
The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) will recognize S. Suresh Madhavan, M.B.A., Ph.D., FAPhA professor and chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Systems and Policy at the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy, for his innovative research addressing the profound health disparities in West Virginia. He will receive the Paul R. Dawson Award for Excellence in Patient Care Research on July 23 during the Science Plenary at Pharmacy Education 2018, the AACP Annual Meeting, in Boston, Massachusetts.

WVU physicians volunteer, perform free corrective surgery in Haiti
A group of 10 providers, eight from WVU Medicine, visited Pignon, Haiti, in March to deliver much-needed care to 30 patients. The group was part of Interplast West Virginia, Inc., an all-volunteer program in which physicians perform free surgery repairing facial, hand or other deformities and burn scars of patients in Third World nations.

When Dr. Clay Marsh looks out the windows at West Virginia University, he sees a landscape of rolling hills nestled in the Appalachian Mountains. The scenery is breathtaking but deceiving, as it conceals one of the worst public health crises in modern times: rampant and deadly abuse of opioid pain medication. Marsh, WVU’s vice president and executive dean for health sciences, believes a solution is possible.
