WVU transforms neuroscience research and education with new Department of Neuroscience
In an effort to continue to improve brain health and wellness and understanding of neurological disorders, West Virginia University is bringing together more than 50 of its laboratories and dozens of educators to form a new Department of Neuroscience within the School of Medicine and as a part of the recently established Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute.
The challenge and the opportunity of the contemporary opioid epidemic
In the U.S. there have been numerous drug epidemics with different policy responses to each. Author Henry Brownstein will discuss the crack cocaine, methamphetamine and contemporary opioid epidemics, the policy responses to each and their consequences. His talk is planned Wednesday (July 11) at 1 p.m. in 104 Downtown Campus Library. The contemporary opioid epidemic is atypical and offers both a challenge and an opportunity for drug policy. His talk is sponsored by the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences, the Research Center on Violence and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology.

ANESTHESIOLOGY Grigore Toma, MD joins the Department of Anesthesiology. He was previously a clinical assistant professor at Oklahoma University Hospital. He completed anesthesiology residency at the University of New Mexico and a neuroanesthesia fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania.
Costello appointed to the CHIP Board of Directors
Lisa M. Costello, M.D., has recently been appointed as a citizen member to the Board of Directors of the West Virginia Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
WVU to host tobacco experts leading efforts on reducing tobacco-related disparities
Tobacco disparities thought leader experts will gather in Morgantown, W.Va., July 9 and 10 to develop a strategic blueprint for continued efforts toward reducing the burden of tobacco-related disease and death.
Teddy Bear Clinic to be held July 14 at Monongalia County Ballpark
WVU Medicine Children's Child Life Department is holding its annual Teddy Bear Clinic at the Monongalia County Ballpark on Saturday, July 14, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. This event is free for children in the community to attend.
WVU School of Medicine launches new advance track curriculum to help lessen student debt
Incoming West Virginia University School of Medicine students can compete for a spot in the new Mountaineer Accelerated Track to Enter Residency, or MATTER program, which provides a fast-track curriculum option— allowing medical students to graduate earlier and with less debt.
Third-floor POC renovation underway
Phase 1 of a three-part renovation to the third floor of the Physician Office Center begins today (Monday, July 2) and should conclude around the end of the year.

A new TEDX podcast features an interview with Dr. Michael McCawley of the School of Public Health's Department of Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences. In the interview, TEDX asks, "Can noise from fracking operations affect your health?"
