WVU in the News: McCawley warns Congress of dangers from mountaintop mining
Clinical Associate Professor Michael McCawley, Ph.D., at the West Virginia University School of Public Health told a House subcommittee on Tuesday, April 9, that his research shows mountaintop coal mining creates a health risk to both coal miners and residents who live near such mining sites.

WVU Hospitals receives Certificate of Need approval to acquire Jackson General Hospital
Jackson General Hospital is one step closer to becoming a member of the West Virginia University Health System. The West Virginia Health Care Authority approved WVU Hospitals’ Certificate of Need (CON) application to acquire the hospital on March 28.
First student accepted into new Accelerated Bachelor's/Master's Program in Immunology and Medical Microbiology
Beginning fall of 2020, the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cell Biology will offer an Accelerated Bachelors/Master’s Degree in Immunology and Medical Microbiology.
Immunology and Medical Microbiology student wins first place at Van Liere Research Conference
Sydney Westfall, a senior undergraduate student in the Immunology and Medical Microbiology program, was the winner in the Undergraduate Research Poster category at the 54th Van Liere Research Conference held March 21–22 at the Health Sciences Center.
Immunology and Medical Microbiology students awarded research internships
The Immunology and Medical Microbiology (IMMB) program recently selected four students to participate in a research internship program offered by the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cell Biology. The internships, designed to provide long-term financial support for the selected students, offers invaluable experience and enhances the opportunities for success in graduate school, professional school, industry or government after graduation. Research experience offers the ability to better understand published works, learn to balance collaborative and individual work, and determine the area of interest. The department offers internships of research-intensive training in the fields of microbiology, infectious diseases, immunology, neuro-immunology, vaccinology, cancer cell biology and molecular biology. Selected participants get to opportunity to work on research projects under the direction of a primary member of the faculty from the Department. The program supports four students each year. Interns join a laboratory the summer after their sophomore year and have two full years to develop and conduct an independent research project. Students selected in 2019 include:
Immunology and Medical Microbiology students receive 2019 SURE Fellowships
The Office of Undergraduate Research provides students the opportunity to participate in research as early as their first semester on campus. Every semester, many Honors College students take advantage of the resources provided by this office to match with a professor doing research in their field of interest. The Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) is an eight-week summer undergraduate research experience for students interested in careers in research or graduate school within their disciplines. The selected students receive a stipend and are expected to research full-time for those eight weeks. Four students in the Immunology and Medical Microbiology undergraduate program have accepted 2019 SURE Fellowships. Junior Quinn Hopen will work with Dr. Jennifer Franko; sophomore Katherine Lee with Dr. Edwin Wan; sophomore Wendy Jent with Dr. Paul Chantler; and freshman Lily Schelling with Dr. Salik Hussain.
May 2019 Commencement details for faculty
The commencement ceremony for the M.D. program is scheduled for May 2019. The Class of 2019 will walk the aisle on Friday, May 10, at 7 p.m. at the Creative Arts Center.

Biomedical Research Awareness Day (BRAD) will take place on Thursday, April 11th in the Pylons Lobby from 11–1 p.m.
WVU School of Dentistry’s Mesaros Symposium addressed the impact of diabetes on oral health
The Mesaros Symposium is a continuing education course for physicians and dentists. The 2019 seminar focused on diagnosing and treating both diabetes and periodontal disease.
