Save the date: Health Sciences faculty engagement event scheduled for Sept. 19
WVU Health Sciences faculty are invited to attend a Faculty Development Program engagement event on Monday, September 19, 2022, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Erickson Alumni Center.
Stipend available to health professions students through Scholars Program
Applications are now open for the West Virginia Area Health Education Centers Rural Community Health Scholars Program (RCH Scholars). RCH Scholars is a two-year program available to 75 of West Virginia’s top health professions students interested in serving medically underserved and/or rural populations across the state.
Brief internet outage scheduled for July 3
On Sunday, July 3, at 10 p.m., there will be a brief internet outage for the Health Sciences campus network, including Morgantown, Charleston and Eastern Division campuses.

ORISE to host participant/alumni panel discussion on June 28
Interested in learning more about the ORISE internship and fellowship experience? Want to hear firsthand from those who have participated in an ORISE opportunity about the impact these appointments can have? On Tuesday, June 28, from 3 to 4 p.m. EST ORISE will be holding a panel discussion featuring current and former ORISE participants. The panelists each hold a unique perspective on different ORISE programs and organizations in a variety of fields, including some who have leveraged their experience in an ORISE program to propel them into successful federal careers. In this session, attendees will hear about the experiences of the panelists, learn how to make the most of their internship or fellowship opportunity and have the chance to ask questions.
Student Affairs welcomes new team member
On June 16, Tessa Congo joined the School of Public Health in a permanent, full-time capacity as an outreach coordinator with the Office of Academic and Student Affairs. She will be working to help develop and execute student programming at all levels to the School of Public Health and its stakeholders. Along with Bradlee Hartman, Tessa will have a heavy focus on working with Scot McIntosh to expand career and professional development opportunities for students and alumni by redesigning and implementing mandatory, one-on-one career advising and professional development meetings with undergraduate/graduate students and young alumni during each semester of enrollment in the program.
Advising specialist to depart School of Public Health
Sarah Opatz, developmental advising specialist, will be leaving the School of Public Health, effective July 1, 2022.
Health Sciences students invited to participate in HIV/IPE volunteer opportunity
The MidAtlantic AIDS Education and Training Center is offering a volunteer opportunity in HIV workforce development for third- and fourth-year students at WVU Health Sciences this summer. Participants will receive a $10 gift card to Chick-fil-A or Starbucks and two hours of community service with certificate upon completion.
TRANSFORM program accepting applications
The TRANSFORM program, supported by the National Institutes of General Medical Sciences, is designed by and for faculty from historically under-represented minority in science and medicine, including those identifying as Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, American Indian or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islanders.
WVU research finds LGBTQ people face barriers to health care, especially in rural areas
During Pride Month, it’s easy to find rainbow-colored health and wellness products—from bandages, to mouthwash, to fitness trackers—in stores or online. But actual health care that meets the needs of members of the LGBTQ community can be harder to get.
