WVU Health System makes Forbes’ list of “America’s Best Employers By State 2023”

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University Health System has been included in Forbes’ list of “America’s Best Employers By State 2023.”

According to Forbes, it “partnered with market research firm Statista to survey a total of 70,000 full- or part-time employees across all 50 states and the District of Columbia who work at companies with more than 500 workers nationwide. Participants were asked whether they would recommend their employer to friends and family, and to evaluate their employer based on criteria including working conditions, diversity, compensation packages, potential for development, and company image.

“Participants were also asked to assess employers beyond their own: Respondents could evaluate employers in their particular state; nationally, participants were able to rate employers anywhere within their respective industries. All surveys were anonymous to encourage candor.

“The number of organizations that made the list in each state varied by the size of its companies and workforce. Ultimately, a total of 1,392 organizations made the list. Of those, 1,123 companies are ranked in one state only and 269 are ranked in more than one state.

“The healthcare and social services sector was the most represented nationally, with educational institutions coming in a close second.”

The WVU Health System, which operates under the brand name WVU Medicine, employs nearly 30,000 people at hospitals and clinics in West Virginia, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. It is West Virginia’s largest healthcare system and largest private employer with more than 2,500 licensed beds, 4,900 providers, and more than $5 billion in total operating revenues.

In July, Forbes ranked the WVU Health System #93 on its list of “America’s Best Employers For Women,” and in March, the WVU Health System was the only health system in the state and region to be named to the Becker’s Healthcare “2023 list of Top Places to Work in Healthcare.”
