Community-based research town hall
WVCTSI and the WVU Mountaineer Health Initiative are co-sponsoring a town hall meeting to highlight research taking place across the state. “Conversation and Collaboration: WVU Community-Based Researchers and Outreach Staff Making a Difference,” offers attendees the chance to learn about the range of community engaged research and outreach across the state, meet colleagues engaged in similar work, identify common issues, and ascertain better ways to support each other in the field.
Stopping disease before it starts - dental students share oral health message
School of Dentistry students often take their oral health awareness messages on the road. Most recently, they explored the WV Botanic Gardens and met with hundreds of children and parents.

Public Health faculty to provide evaluation expertise for new Family Engagement Center
Three West Virginia University School of Public Health faculty members will be part of a $4.8 million Department of Education grant to develop a new West Virginia Family Engagement Center. Associate Professor Alfgeir Kristjansson, Ph.D., and adjunct faculty members Megan Smith and Michael Mann – formerly full-time faculty in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences – will serve as external evaluators for the project.
Du Publishes Two Studies That Describe an Improved Approach to Bone Marrow Transplant
WVU cancer researcher and Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences Wei Du, MD, PhD, teamed up with researchers from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center to focus on improving outcomes and reducing side effects of traditional stem cell transplant. Their work was recently published in Leukemia, one of the top journals in hematology.
NIH awards WVU $11.2 million for interdisciplinary cancer research
West Virginia University’s School of Pharmacy will soon become one of the few pharmacy schools in the nation that leads a center of biomedical research excellence. Funded by the National Institutes of Health, these centers support interdisciplinary, thematically related research into preventing, diagnosing and treating health problems.

Influenza vaccine required for all employees working in patient care areas
WVU faculty, providers, residents, students and volunteers whose job duties bring them into contact with patients are required to receive the flu vaccination prior to Wed., Dec. 5. Options are available through Employee Health.
