20 years later, MUSHROOM continues to give back to the community
Multidisciplinary UnSheltered Homeless Relief Outreach of Morgantown (MUSHROOM) is a student-led organization at West Virginia University that brings together students who are passionate about serving their community. While the organization is rooted in health sciences, its mission extends beyond the textbooks and clinical training. Open to all WVU students, MUSHROOM offers a way to step outside the classroom and into the community, gaining real world experience while giving back to the community they call home.
From Mountaineer Playbook to Emmy winner: WVU School of Nursing’s new multimedia specialist shares his story
What started as a love for storytelling in a small West Virginia town has led to an Emmy Award and a full-time role at West Virginia University. Recent WVU graduate Samuel Nichols has stepped into his new position as a multimedia specialist for the WVU School of Nursing, bringing with him a passion for creating meaningful media and telling impactful stories.
Beckley nursing students support health fair
WVU School of Nursing Beckley Campus juniors in NSG 311 Medical-Surgical Nursing recently helped host a Community Health and Resource Fair at Wellspring of Greenbrier. Students provided blood pressure screenings, blood glucose checks, mental health education, and basic “Stop the Bleed” training for community members.
Senior nursing student selected as Mountaineer of Distinction finalist
Greta Schmidt, a WVU School of Nursing senior and president of the Student Nurses' Association, has been selected as a finalist for the Mountaineer of Distinction Award, which is one of WVU's highest student honors.
Tom Golisano makes transformational gift to WVU Medicine Children’s
WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital received an extraordinary boost today through a $28 million unrestricted gift from Thomas Golisano, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and civic leader whose vision and generosity have transformed communities and institutions across the United States. The gift was presented earlier today (Oct. 28) by Mr. Golisano to a delegation of WVU Medicine senior leaders at the Golisano Institute for Business and Entrepreneurship in Brighton, New York. To commemorate this historic moment and honor Mr. Golisano’s legacy, WVU Medicine Children’s will now be known as WVU Medicine Golisano Children’s.

Javier Cárdenas, M.D., director of the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute’s (RNI) Concussion and Brain Injury Clinic, received the 2025 Purple Ribbon Award from the West Virginia Coalition Against Domestic Violence at its Annual Luncheon and Award Ceremony yesterday (Oct. 23) in Charleston.

Glioblastoma is treated the same way today as it was in 2005, said Woodworth, professor and chair of neurosurgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland.

WVU to celebrate Appalachian traditions during 78th annual Mountaineer Week
The 78th annual Mountaineer Week celebration of Appalachian heritage begins Monday (Nov. 3) and continues through Sunday, Nov. 9. During the week, students, faculty, staff and visitors can enjoy cultural demonstrations, music, storytelling, food and crafts from the Appalachian region.
