WVU Healthcare offers health screenings

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. –WVU Healthcare has teamed up with the Rotary Club of Morgantown and HealthSouth MountainView Regional Rehabilitation Hospital to offer multiphasic blood and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screenings to the community.

The screenings will be offered Saturday, August 14, from 6:30-11 a.m. at HealthSouth MountainView, located at 1160 Van Voorhis Road. The screenings are being performed by WVU Healthcare’s Clinical Laboratories.

The multiphasic screening will provide 15 baseline blood analyses, including cholesterol. Results can help identify current or potential health problems, such as coronary heart disease, anemia, diabetes and kidney disease.

Niti Armistead, M.D., a WVU internal medicine physician, encourages participants to discuss test results with their healthcare provider. “Test results that fall outside of the recommended ranges may or may not indicate a health problem,” she said. “Your healthcare provider can determine if abnormalities indicate the need for more testing or treatment.”

For the most accurate results, multiphasic participants should not eat, drink or smoke for 12 hours prior to the screening. Medication can be taken with sips of water.

The PSA test measures a substance called prostate-specific antigen made by the prostate gland. PSA may become elevated due to infection, enlargement of the prostate or cancer.

The cost for the multiphasic screening is $35, PSA, $15. Payment can be made at the time of the screening.
