WVU APhA Annual Meeting and alumni reception wrap-up

On Saturday, March 23, the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy held its annual alumni reception at the APhA Meeting in Seattle, Washington. It was an excellent chance for alumni to catch up and current students to network with some of the best pharmacy professionals in the business.

APhA CEO and SoP alumnus Tom Menighan, (BSPharm,'74) shared his plans to step down as CEO. Menighan plans to retire sometime in summer 2020. He plans to help with the search for his successor, which will begin this month.

Alumna Michelle Valentine (BSPharm, '71) shared her connection with the School of Pharmacy and spoke about why she's proud to be a Mountaineer. Other speakers included Dean William Petros and the School's Director of Development Kevin Tehpabock.

The 2020 APhA Annual Meeting will be held in Washington, D.C.

During the Annual Meeting, it was announced that the WVU School of Pharmacy’s Chapter of the American Pharmacists Association – Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) won the 2019 region two award for Operation Heart activities. Eighteen student-members of WVU's APhA-ASP were on hand to celebrate the moment.

Operation Heart, a program to create awareness of cardiovascular disease, was launched as an official APhA-ASP National Patient Care project in 2010. Through participation in Operation Heart, student pharmacists work in their communities to encourage lifestyle modifications, monitor associated risk factors and provide education about medications for heart disease. APhA-ASP Region two includes schools of pharmacy from West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, D.C., Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey. This is the second year in a row that the WVU Chapter of APhA-ASP has won the region two award for Operation Heart.
