Frantz named Nurse of the Year at WVU Medicine-WVU Hospitals

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Pamela Frantz, B.S.N., R.N., C.C.R.N., has been named 2019 Nurse of the Year at WVU Medicine-WVU Hospitals. She was honored at the Nurse Recognition Luncheon held today, May 6, in celebration of National Nurses Week, which is celebrated May 6-12 annually.

Frantz, who has been a registered professional nurse for almost 40 years, was nominated for the award by Mary Fanning, D.N.P., R.N., director of nursing administration, who described her as someone who exudes excellence and serves as a role model for other nurses every day.

Other finalists included Michael Schwalm, B.S.N., R.N., WVU Medicine Children’s; Susan Heiskell, M.S.N., R.N., 7 West; Monica Thomas, B.S.N., R.N., C.C.R.N., WVU Heart and Vascular Institute; and Ashley Petrosky, B.S.N., R.N., C.N.R.N.,10 East.

WVU Medicine-WVU Hospitals has held an American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet® designation for excellence in nursing services since 2005.

National Nurses Week is a time for individuals, employers, other healthcare professionals, community leaders, and nurses to recognize the vast contributions and positive impact of America’s 4 million registered nurses. The first national week of recognition for nurses was celebrated October 11-16, 1954, to observe the 100th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s mission to Crimea. National Nurses Week was first observed on the current dates, which coincide with Nightingale’s birthday on May 12, in 1991, and it became an annual event in 1994.
