WVU School of Nursing now offers post-master’s certificate in Nurse Executive Leadership

From bedside to boardroom – nurse leaders make an impact on policy and patient care at all levels. A new certificate program from West Virginia University's School of Nursing is available to help prepare nurses who are exploring a career path in leadership.

The Nurse Executive Leadership (NEL) certificate program is specifically designed for current nursing professionals who hold a Master’s degree or higher in Nursing. These nurses may be working in advanced practice, education, administration, and/or direct patient care roles.

“Our responsibility in educating nurses is to prepare them for opportunities that may take them from direct patient care into leadership positions,” Tara Hulsey, PhD, dean of the WVU School of Nursing and vice president of Health Promotion and Wellness at WVU said. “Nurses leaders play an integral part in the health care continuum, and our new certificate program will provide them the knowledge and training to be successful in management roles.”

Applications for the program will be accepted this month on the School’s website with classes beginning August 2021. The 22-credit hour program will be taught online with a requirement of 300 clinical hours.

Graduates will be prepared for Nurse Executive Certification (NE-BC) through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the Certified Nurse Executive Practice (CENP) certification through the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL).
