Enhancing Rural Home Care for Chronically Ill
With a $2.7 million award from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Nursing Research that is one of the largest ever for the WVU School of Nursing, the faculty researchers aim to support these families while increasing access to care in the rural reaches of the Mountain State by testing an integrated, nurse-led intervention for family home care management of end-stage heart failure and palliative care.

Groundbreaking Nursing Research
When most people think of nursing, they think of hospital bedside care. But as I'm sure you all know, the field of nursing is much more expansive.
At the WVU School of Nursing, we introduce our students to a wide range of opportunities, including nursing research. As an R1 Research Institution, we are leading some truly groundbreaking and impactful nursing research.
I want to congratulate our team of researchers, Drs. Ubolrat "Diu" Piamjariyakul, Angel Smothers and Stephanie Young, on their outstanding $2.7 million award from the NIH. I know their research will make a huge impact on family caregivers and their loved ones.
Let's Go,
-Dean Hulsey

Alex Kittle, WVU School of Nursing Class of 2023, was recently featured in The Wright Stuff. He currently works as an RN II on 9SE, a cardiac stepdown unit at WVU Medicine J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital.
Q: Why did you get into nursing?
A: “As a child, I was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, meaning I was surrounded by nurses who cared for me starting at a very young age. Those nurses helped facilitate my passion for becoming a nurse myself because they showed me the impact you can have on one’s life by simply caring enough to be there for someone in a time of need, sometimes when they’re at their most vulnerable.
“I always found it comforting to know when I was going to the hospital as a kid that I was going to see familiar faces when I walked onto the unit, so my purpose as a nurse is/was to be that for someone else and to be that familiar, smiley face that can hopefully make my patients’ stay while here at the hospital a little bit better of an experience!”
