Stop the Bleed classes offered

The WVU Medicine Jon Michael Moore Trauma Center is offering Stop the Bleed classes, starting in January 2019.

Motivated by the 2012 tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School and multiple tragedies that have occurred in the ensuing years, the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma is leading the effort to save lives by teaching the civilian population to provide vital initial response to stop uncontrolled bleeding in emergency situations. Without civilian interventions in these circumstances, preventable deaths will occur.

The class consists of a presentation and hands-on skills training, consisting of the application of direct pressure, wound packing, and tourniquet application.

The classes are being offered in 2019 on the following dates: Friday, Jan. 11; Friday, Feb. 15; and Friday, March 15. The class will be held at 3 p.m. in the Bruce McClymonds Conference Center at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital.

Employees can enroll in a Stop the Bleed class through NetLearning website (look for Learning Opportunities). The course will last approximately one hour.

It is vital that WVU Medicine employees, both clinical and non-clinical, are trained.
