Klass to present about pediatric literacy during Gwendolyn Hogan Lectureship series
The West Virginia University Department of Pediatrics will welcome Perri Klass, M.D., as the Gwendolyn Hogan Lectureship speaker on Wednesday June 19, for two lectures – grand rounds at 8 a.m. and a special conference at noon.
Dr. Klass is a professor of journalism and pediatrics at New York University and director of the University’s College of Arts and Science Minor in Medical Humanities program. In addition, she has served as the medical director of the national Reach Out and Read organization since the year 2000.
Her grand rounds presentation is titled “Books, Brains, Bonds: New Chapters in Pediatric Literacy Promotion,” and learners can expect the following objectives:
- Describe how early literacy skills reflect early relationships and the home literacy environment
- Use literacy promotion to address critical disparities in cognitive and social emotional development
- Demonstrate the components of the ROR model in primary care practice and the ways that promoting and modeling reading with young children can foster responsive parenting and language-rich parent-child interactions
- Implement the AAP policy statement on literacy promotion in primary care by integrating this model into routine care starting at birth.
The noon conference is titled “Living to Growup.”
The morning grand rounds will be held in Hostler Auditorium (G17) of the Health Science North building. The noon conference will be held in the Family Resource Conference Room. Meals will be available for both. Virtual participants can log in at hsc.wvu.edu/webcast.
Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits will be available for qualified participants.
