Dr. Scarneo-Miller named educator of the year by West Virginia Athletic Training Association

Samantha Scarneo-Miller, Ph.D., LAT, ATC, assistant professor and program director of the Master of Athletic Training Program at the West Virginia University School of Medicine has been recognized as educator of the year by the West Virginia Athletic Trainers’ Association.

Each year, the organization names an educator of the year for their exceptional work in educating and training the next generation of athletic trainers. Dr. Scarneo-Miller embodies that as an advocate and leader in the profession of athletic training, bringing expertise and experience into the classroom.

As educator of the year, Dr. Scarneo-Miller is being recognized for providing not only high-quality education, but also intentional mentorship to her students. She attributes this success to her integration of research into her teaching and her devotion to cultivating relationships with students outside of the classroom.

“I think it is important to know my students for who they are as people, not just students,” said Dr. Scarneo-Miller. “I care about my students and it’s important to me that they are getting the most updated, evidence-based research to learn from because that is what will set them apart when they graduate and lead them to be well-informed providers.”

Dr. Scarneo-Miller specializes in preventing sudden death in sport, healthcare administration and public health application to sports medicine and believes that educating the next generation of athletic trainers is an important responsibility. She hopes to continue teaching her students life-saving clinical skills and inspire them to be empathetic healthcare providers that excel in the field of athletic training.

The WVATA is a nonprofit organization that promotes and supports the athletic training profession in West Virginia. As president-elect of the WVATA, Dr. Scarneo-Miller looks forward to making an impact in her field and continuing to lead athletic trainers in the state.
