Dental school faculty participate in state oral health summit
West Virginia University School of Dentistry was well represented at this year’s West Virginia Oral Health Summit held at the Stonewall Resort on March 4, 2022. It was the first in-person Summit since the COVID pandemic began in March 2020. The Summit showcased main session speakers such as RADM Tim Ricks, a Workforce Panel discussion, and an infosession during lunch on hemp-based medicine.
The Oral Health Summit was sponsored by Marshall University School of Medicine and the WV Oral Health Coalition with support from WV Rural Health Association, WVU School of Dentistry, the Claude Washington Benedum Foundation and Marshall Health Department of Dentistry and Oral Maxillofacial Surgery.
In addition to being a partner and sponsor, the School of Dentistry contributed to the program through a series of breakout presentations during the morning and afternoon. Presenters included:
- Ms. Amy Funk – Panelist, Workforce Panel
- Dr. Jerry Bouquot – The Abused Mouth – Oral Effects of Uses and Abuses
- Dr. Gina Graziani – Caries Prevention in the Young Child
- Dr. Fotinos Panagakos – Medicaid Adult Dental Benefit
- Ms. Suann Gaydos – Treating Nicotine Addiction.

We are thankful for event organizers including Ms. Gina Sharps, Ms. Bobbi Jo Muto and Ms. Kim Tieman. Through their tireless efforts, the Summit allowed those with a passion for improving oral health for all West Virginians to gather together, learn, network, and leave energized to address the oral health issues in our state. The dental school looks forward to hosting the WVOH Summit June 2022 meeting in person on the Health Sciences Center campus.
