Department of Orthopaedics emerges as a leader in national clinical trial to advance patient care
The West Virginia University Department of Orthopaedics recently announced that it received recognition for enrolling more than 1,100 patients over six years into a nationwide study aimed at investigating an evidence-based approach to preventing pulmonary embolisms—a potentially life-threatening complication following surgery.
The Department’s contributions in the Pulmonary Embolism Prevention after Hip and Knee Replacement study, known nationwide as PEPPER, earned consistently high marks among the 32 other medical centers that participated.
Matthew Dietz, M.D., department chair and current principal investigator at WVU, attributed that to the department’s overall team effort, including Jennifer Eicher, clinical research manager.
“Our department’s participation in the PEPPER trial exemplifies our commitment to advancing orthopaedic care through rigorous research and collaboration,” Dr. Dietz said. “Achieving such high enrollment numbers, with multiple recognitions as a top enrolling site, underscores the dedication of our team and the trust of our patients.”
Since its inception in 2017, the PEPPER Trial has aimed to leverage patient-centered research methodologies, ensuring that clinical care priorities align with the preferences and values of those receiving treatment.
“Being among the top 10 of 32 sites nationwide is a testament to the high caliber of our team and our unwavering dedication to advancing patient care,” Dietz said. “This achievement not only strengthens our reputation in clinical research but also highlights the vital role of academic medical centers in addressing critical health challenges.”
As the PEPPER Trial concludes, the WVU Department of Orthopaedics is poised to apply the knowledge gained to further enhance orthopedic care and patient outcomes. The department remains committed to engaging in collaborative, high-impact studies that address pressing issues in musculoskeletal health.
