Public Health researcher to discuss agenda setting at Summer Policy Institute

As part of a three-day immersive learning experience, this year’s West Virginia Center on Budget and Policy Summer Policy Institute participants will hear from WVU School of Public Health’s Lauri Andress.

Andress will deliver “Framing the Message,” a discussion on agenda setting as a key component of the policy process. Andress, an assistant professor in the Department of Health Policy, Management and Leadership, says a problem must be turned into a public issue in order to reach policy goals. Throughout her presentation she will demonstrate how to use different concepts to frame social justice issues and policies.

The Institute will take place on the West Virginia State University campus in Institute, W.Va., July 26-28. Andress’ presentation will be on Saturday, July 27.

The fourth annual event attracts undergraduate and graduate students who want to learn about policy issues. This year’s institute will focus on criminal justice reform. Through seminars, workshops, experiential learning groups and a simulation with officials from the U.S. Department of Justice, participants are able to network with their peers and prepare for a future in policy-related fields.
