Communication Sciences and Disorders programs expected to transition to School of Medicine

As part of its Friday, Feb. 28 meeting, the WVU Board of Governors will receive a proposal to transition the degrees offered by the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders from the College of Education and Human Services to the School of Medicine Professional Programs and Undergraduate Division.

The proposal, prepared by the School of Medicine in partnership with CEHS, helps position the department and programs to be more competitive with peer institutions that are closely aligned with their corresponding health professions majors.

Provided there are no concerns raised about this transition by the BOG, students will begin enrolling through the School of Medicine in fall of 2021.

The programs slated for transition include a bachelor’s and two minors at the undergraduate level in Communication Sciences and Disorders and graduate programs in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. The move to the School of Medicine would reinstate recruitment efforts for the Audiology program, which has been closed to admissions since fall of 2019.

Additional internal and external communication will occur following the BOG meeting.

For questions, contact Jayne Brandel (Jayne.Brandel@mail.wvu.edu), Communication Sciences and Disorders chair, or Mary Beth Mandich (mmandich@hsc.wvu.edu), vice dean, School of Medicine Professional and Undergraduate programs.
