WVU School of Medicine names Sarwari as new chair of Medicine
Arif Sarwari, M.D., infectious diseases specialist, has been named to lead the Department of Medicine. Dr. Sarwari has been serving as interim chair of the department for more than a year and administering the day-to-day operational management and oversight.
Dr. Tim Nurkiewicz named to Particle and Fibre Toxicology editorial board
Tim Nurkiewicz, Ph.D., professor in WVU's Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, was recently named to the editorial board of the Springer Nature journal "Particle and Fibre Toxicology."
WVU Cancer Institute first in the nation to offer IORT for glioblastoma
The WVU Cancer Institute is the first institution in the United States to offer intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) to treat glioblastoma.

Health Sciences community invited to West Virginia Writers’ Workshop
Several events at this year’s West Virginia Writers’ Workshop, July 20-23 at WVU, are focused on the role of writing and storytelling in health. Presenters include narrative medicine faculty from several campuses across the U.S., along with the leaders of an expressive writing program for patients at the WVU Cancer Institute. Health sciences faculty, staff and students are invited to participate in some or all of the Workshop.
WVU cancer researcher participates in study that shows promising treatments for certain patients with advanced colorectal cancer
A group of cancer researchers, including Richard Goldberg, M.D., director of the WVU Cancer Institute, released a study today in the Journal of the American Medical Association comparing the results of combinations of chemotherapy delivered with targeted therapy drugs in the treatment of people with advanced colorectal cancer who had not received prior drug treatment for their advanced disease.

Free healthcare screenings for first responders
WVU Occupational Medicine will be hosting an event in Morgantown this fall for all first responders (fire fighters, law enforcement officers, EMS, and Search & Rescue crews). “Protecting Our Local Heroes” will include free healthcare screenings that will be held at the WVU Health and Education Building September 11-14, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Feyko and Hwang accepted into WVU Vascular Surgery Fellowship
The WVU Heart and Vascular Institute, the Department of Surgery and the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery recently announced the newly accredited West Virginia University Vascular Surgery Fellowship. Our goals are to provide a learning and training environment which facilitates the development of expert vascular surgery specialists who will have the tools and abilities to become leaders in both the clinical and academic communities of vascular surgeons.
