WVU researchers, health professionals lead new effort to prevent HIV and hepatitis C outbreaks related to opioid epidemic
When communities face epidemics of drug abuse, a wave of infectious diseases often follows, including hepatitis and HIV. A new federally-funded program in southern West Virginia, led by West Virginia University, will seek to interrupt that cycle.

The event will take place Sept. 14-15 at the Holiday Inn, Morgantown, off Pineview Drive. The deadline to register for the conference is Sept. 7.

WVU in the News: Study aims to increase effectiveness of opioid addiction treatment
A new study being conducted at WVU is aimed at increasing the effectiveness of addiction treatment. As many as 20 percent of people addicted to opioids will not respond to the standard treatment of suboxone. Genetic background is one of several factors WVU and the West Virginia Clinical and Translation Science Institute will study to provide better more patient-specific addiction treatment.
