WVU doctors create Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Health to halt chronic disease
As recent national statistics for obesity and diabetes revealed West Virginia’s ranking as number one in both, a team of interdisciplinary healthcare providers at West Virginia University is creating a new Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Health with the bold goal of preventing and reversing these conditions with not more medication, but less.
Grant will help WVU Medicine identify HIV, Hepatitis C patients
The WVU Medicine Department of Emergency Medicine has been awarded a four-year, $1.375 million grant from Frontlines of Communities in the United States (FOCUS) to identify and link to care patients infected with HIV and hepatitis C (HCV) at several WVU Medicine clinical sites.
Cancer Institute summer research fellow wins first place award at IDeA Conference
Daniel Berrebi, a 2017 WVU Cancer Institute summer research fellow, won first place in the cancer category of the student poster session at this year’s Southeast Regional IDeA Conference in Morgantown. He was selected for his research titled Inhibition of CCL5 and Nodal by Adipose-derived Stem Cells in the Breast Tumor Microenvironment. In his work at the Cancer Institute under the mentorship of Linda Vona-Davis, PhD, Berrebi used 3D matrix models to study the role of stem cells in contributing to the spread of breast cancer.
Grand opening ceremony for WVU Cancer Institute at Reynolds Memorial Hospital to be held Friday
The WVU Cancer Institute at Reynolds Memorial Hospital will hold a grand opening ceremony and reception at 10 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 10, at the newly constructed center on the hospital campus in Glen Dale. The clinic will hold its first patient visits on Nov. 27.

WVCTSI and the West Virginia University Health Sciences Center are pleased to welcome Uwe Staub, Ph.D., chief operating officer with Epigenomics, for a special seminar on November 14. Dr. Staub will present, “From the Idea to a Final Product –Translating Targeted Bisulfite Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) on Liquid biopsies into Product on the Market.”

Biostatistics Monthly Seminar scheduled for Nov. 16
The SPH Department of Biostatistics will host its next monthly seminar on Nov. 16. Eugenie Jackson, PhD, research associate in the WVU Department of Biostatistics, will present “Two Recent Algorithms to Infer Structure in Longitudinal Vaginal Microbiome Data” from 2:45-4:00pm in G274 HSN-South.
WVU researcher examines patient awareness of prescription drug risks
Prescription medications, including antidepressants and pain medications, can have various side effects and risks, and a West Virginia University researcher is examining whether patients understand the risks associated with driving. Robin Pollini, Associate Director of the WVU School of Public Health’s Injury Control Research Center, led a study on driver awareness of the potential effects of prescription medications.
