Dr. Vernon receives Lifetime Achievement Award
Michael Vernon, Ph.D., professor and former chair of WVU’s Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Society of Reproductive Biologists and Technologists (SRBT) annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas in October.
WVU Medicine Children’s growing into new tower to be added onto J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital
WVU Hospitals announced today (Nov. 16) plans to construct a 10-story tower dedicated to WVU Medicine Children’s to address capacity issues and better serve the healthcare needs of all of West Virginia’s women and children. As a result of the project, 150 beds will be added to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital.

WVU will celebrate the new Health Sciences Student Activity Center at noon Monday, Nov. 27. The Activity Center features a pool table, ping-pong, foosball and space to relax. It’s open to students 24 hours a day.

ANESTHESIOLOGY Laima Bendel, MD joins the Department of Anesthesiology. Dr. Bendel is a pediatric anesthesiologist who was formerly an associate professor of anesthesiology with University of Pittsburgh Physicians and the Medical Director of Satellites for Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.
School of Medicine seeks new chair for the Department of Pediatrics
West Virginia University is seeking an exceptional leader for the chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center in Morgantown, W.Va. This position will also serve as Physician-in-Chief at WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital.
WVU mourns loss of iconic physician
James E. Brick, M.D., who joined the School of Medicine at West Virginia University as an intern in 1977 and rose to lead the School as interim dean from 2008-2010, died Sunday, Nov. 12, at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital as the result of a sudden illness.

The WVU Heart and Vascular Institute is one of the first in the country to introduce new technology shown to protect patients from the risk of stroke during minimally invasive heart valve surgery, known as transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).

Dr. Meghan Turner joins WVU Department of Otolaryngology
Meghan T. Turner, MD is a head and neck/skull base surgeon in the West Virginia Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. She has particular interest and expertise in minimally invasive surgical techniques including endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery, robotic head and neck surgery, and transoral laser surgery.
