Community-based research town hall
WVCTSI and the WVU Mountaineer Health Initiative are co-sponsoring a town hall meeting to highlight research taking place across the state. “Conversation and Collaboration: WVU Community-Based Researchers and Outreach Staff Making a Difference,” offers attendees the chance to learn about the range of community engaged research and outreach across the state, meet colleagues engaged in similar work, identify common issues, and ascertain better ways to support each other in the field.

Du Publishes Two Studies That Describe an Improved Approach to Bone Marrow Transplant
WVU cancer researcher and Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences Wei Du, MD, PhD, teamed up with researchers from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center to focus on improving outcomes and reducing side effects of traditional stem cell transplant. Their work was recently published in Leukemia, one of the top journals in hematology.
WVU Medicine to provide free joint replacements in December
Operation Walk USA takes place each December in an annual tradition of giving back. The program provides all aspects of treatment – surgery, hospitalization, and pre-and post-operative care – at no cost to participating patients who may not qualify for government health coverage, have insurance, or afford surgery on their own.
WVU Cancer Institute one of six sites to participate in national research collaboration
The National Cancer Institute in association with the Beau Biden Cancer Moonshot Initiative recently announced the funding of a new research collaboration, the SIMPRO Research Center. SIMPRO is a consortium of six U.S. healthcare systems, including WVU Medicine, whose goal is to integrate the use of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) into the routine practice of oncology providers to improve symptom management and to decrease hospitalizations.
WVU researcher delves into cardiovascular effects of vaping
Vaping has surpassed all other forms of tobacco use in middle- and high-schoolers. New research led by Mark Olfert, an associate professor in the West Virginia University School of Medicine, suggests if teenagers continue to vape into adulthood, the cardiovascular effects may, by some measures, be as dire as if they’d smoked cigarettes.
