As conspiracy theories about COVID-19 vaccines seem to comfort some people, others are anxious to get the shot they believe will protect them from the deadly virus. Social media has played a role in the spread of information and mis-information alike, according to Elizabeth L. Cohen, associate professor in West Virginia University’s Department of Communication Studies.

Donor-funded research position curbs disease associated with opioid epidemic
As West Virginia became the epicenter of the nation’s opioid epidemic, donor dollars brought Dr. Judith Feinberg to the West Virginia University School of Medicine to expand research focused on the intersection of addiction and infectious disease. More than five years later, her work is making a difference by expanding testing and increasing access to treatments for diseases spread through injection drug use – HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.

Michael McCawley, clinical associate professor in the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences, discussed the role the environment possibly played in the chemical plant explosion at Optima Chemical’s facility on the Chemours Co.’s site in Belle, which killed one plant worker and injured three. .
