For families struggling with Alzheimer’s in Appalachia, the road can be lonely and long. Alzheimer’s is a brain disease that is the most common cause of dementia in older adults. Patients with the disease can live as long as 20 years after diagnosis.
New security booth to be built near Emergency Department
The security booth near the Cancer Institute entrance will be demolished and a new security booth will be built near the Emergency Department entrance, causing traffic to be reduced to one lane in late April and early May.

Hidden Codes for Academic Success
The WVCTSI Females Advancing Clinical and Translational Science (FACTS) group is hosting a special speaker to present a discussion and workshop on academic success. Jeannette South-Paul, M.D., Andrew W. Mathieson UPMC Professor and chair of family medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, will present, “Hidden Codes for Academic Success.” This session will begin with a keynote address from 12 to 1 p.m., followed by a workshop from 1:30 to 2:50 p.m.

Fentanyl deaths up 122 percent in West Virginia, say WVU researchers
If heroin is coffee, fentanyl is espresso. Just as a minuscule cup of espresso can hype you up more than a whole mug of coffee, a single exposure to fentanyl can get a user vastly higher than injecting the same volume of heroin. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says fentanyl is 50 times stronger than heroin.
