The Kolandaivelu Lab Uncover the Mechanism Behind a Protein Associated with Severe Blinding Diseases
Research in Dr. Kolandaivelu’s lab focuses on studying the intricate biology of the retina and using that knowledge to better understand blinding diseases which affect millions of people globally. Recently, his lab published an article in eLife journal of a multi-year project focused on studying a specific protein in the retina, called NMNAT1.

Due to a recent change in membership and pricing structure, the School of Medicine now requires that any faculty member interested in keeping their West Virginia State Medical Association dues active through the University’s account must indicate so in an annual online form. Shafic Sraj, M.D., an assistant professor with the Department of Orthopaedics, currently serves as the Association's president-elect, and can help answer any questions current or potential members have regarding the WVSMA's goals, mission and purpose.
WVU Medicine cystic fibrosis programs receive high rankings from Therapeutic Development Network
The Therapeutic Development Network (TDN), the industry leader in the development of cystic fibrosis treatments, has ranked the WVU Medicine adult and pediatric cystic fibrosis programs 13th out of 90 TDN centers for interventional study enrollment and seventh out of 59 centers for observational studies.
Project SEARCH application window open, virtual open house scheduled
Project SEARCH at WVU Medicine J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital is recruiting interns for its 2022-2023 class. Virtual open houses will be held at 2:45 p.m. on Jan. 26 and Feb. 9. Applications are due April 1 and can be requested through high school guidance counselors.
Dr. Michael Hurst retires from Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery
Dr. Michael Hurst graduated from Marshall University School of Medicine in 1988 after he already pursued his dentistry degree. Dr. Hurst completed his ear, nose and throat residency with the West Virginia University School of Medicine in 1993 where he then became an assistant professor for the department. Dr. Hurst was promoted in 1999 to associate professor, and in 2011 he also became the medical director of perioperative services for WVU Medicine.
