WVU students

Current West Virginia University students at the Health Sciences Center have several options to pursue interests in global health.  In addition to thoroughly researching these opportunities, students should work with a faculty member within their academic department before confirming plans for international travel for academic credit. 

When traveling internationally with a WVU program, including any travel funded by WVU or for which WVU credit is given, travelers are required to complete the WVU International Travel Registration. A travel planning checklist is also referenced on the GEO International Travel tab that will aid student travelers in making any pre-trip arrangements.   

Global Health Interests

The Global Health Program welcomes the active participation of all health professions students including those in dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and public health, as well as faculty and staff in the promotion of global health services.

Additionally, all students, faculty, and staff at WVU Health Sciences have the opportunity to improve their global health advocacy skills through the campus RESULTS chapter. Please see the GEO Events tab for a schedule of upcoming training sessions. 

WVU Health Sciences is a member of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH), which is dedicated to creating balance in resources, exchanging students and faculty between institutions in developed and developing countries, and recognizing the importance of equal partnership between the academic institutions in developing nations and their resource-rich counterparts in the planning, implementation, and management of projects.

Funding and Resources

The Global Engagement Office is proud to offer travel awards to students at WVU Health Sciences. In line with its mission, GEO bestows these grants to students who strive to create long-term, self-sustaining global activities and participate in globally focused field placements or community-based research projects.

Current WVU Health Sciences students may apply to the Nancy Sanders Memorial Student Study Abroad Travel Award. GEO offers up to 5 awards, valued at $2,000.00 each, to assist students who are committed to improving and advancing global health at Health Sciences and abroad. For the 2018 to 2019 academic year, one of these five awards is prioritized for an outbound placement through the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) collaborative of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).

Additionally, advisors are in place in each school to provide information specific to global rotations for each program of study.

If you are interested in rotating with an external organization not listed on our website, please contact GEO with your suggestion. We hope to expand our network of partners over time.

Out-Bound VSLO Electives

The Association of American Medical College’s Visiting Student Learning Opportunities program helps medical and public health students connect with institutions offering short-term elective opportunities. 

These elective opportunities include observerships, summer research programs, clinical opportunities, away rotations, away electives, clinical rotations and visiting opportunities. 

School of Medicine and Public Health students at West Virginia University are encouraged to investigate opportunities and discuss travel plans with their academic advisor and the global engagement advisor in their school.
