WVU Charleston Surgeon Ali F. AbuRahma elected vice president of Society for Vascular Surgery
CHARLESTON W. Va., July 23, 2019 – Dr. Ali F. AbuRahma was elected vice president of the Society for Vascular Surgery at the association’s annual meeting in Maryland. With this new position he begins a three-year term of service that advances to president-elect and then SVS president.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, rural Americans are more likely than their urban counterparts to die prematurely from the five most common killers: heart disease, cancer, unintentional injury, chronic lower respiratory disease and stroke. Telehealth—the use of technology to provide healthcare remotely—is an emerging way to combat these trends. And it’s growing in popularity.

Karyn Wallace has been named vice president of the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute (RNI). She has served as assistant vice president of neuroscience at the RNI since October 2017.

Call for Abstracts: 45th annual Hal Wanger Family Medicine Conference poster session
The 45th Hal Wanger Family Medicine Conference is scheduled for October 3–4 in Morgantown, W.Va. In conjunction with the conference, the family medicine department is soliciting poster presentations for the poster portion of the conference. This is an excellent opportunity for presenters to showcase their research and professional work. Students, residents, fellows and faculty in any health sciences profession are encouraged to participate. A "best poster" award will be given. Abstracts for submission are being accepted through September 6 at 5 p.m., and authors will be notified of acceptance status by September 20. Abstracts should be less than 250 words and include title, name(s) of presenter(s), brief introduction, methods, results, and discussion/conclusion of the project. Abstracts will be assessed via a peer-reviewed process. The conference will begin on Thursday, October 3, followed by evening workshops and will continue through Friday, October 4. Dr. Halvard Wanger organized the conference in 1956. In 1975, the Department of Family Medicine assumed responsibility for hosting this annual conference.
