WVU Medicine has received approval from the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) to offer kidney transplants, making it West Virginia’s first and only fully functional multi-organ transplant center.

Expert Panel: Cancer Treatment Plans Should Include Tailored Exercise Prescriptions
Morgantown, WV – New guidance published this week from exercise oncology experts recommend systematic use of an “exercise prescription” by health care workers and fitness professionals in designing and delivering exercise programs that aim to lower the risk of developing certain cancers and best meet the needs, preferences, and abilities of people with cancer. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) convened a roundtable of experts from 17 partner organizations, which included WVU Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute—part of the National Institutes of Health, to review the latest scientific evidence and offer recommendations about the benefits of exercise for prevention, treatment, recovery and improved survival.
Massachusetts General Hospital surgeon travels to WVU Heart and Vascular Institute to study heart surgery
The WVU Heart and Vascular Institute recently welcomed Nathaniel Langer, M.D., from Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University, for a two-week fellowship to study the advanced atrial fibrillation surgery performed at WVU.

WVU Charleston’s Dr. James P. Griffith awarded American College of Physicians Award for Distinguished Contributions to Behavioral Medicine
Charleston, W.Va. – James P. Griffith, MD, FACP, Professor and Chair of Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry at the WVU School of Medicine Charleston Campus has been awarded the American College of Physicians (ACP) Award for Distinguished Contributions to Behavioral Medicine. The award will be presented to Dr. Griffith at the ACP National Meeting in Los Angeles in April of 2020.

School of Medicine website training signups open
Zane Lacko, the digital communications specialist for the WVU School of Medicine, will hold a second bi-weekly website training on Wednesday, Oct. 30. Based on feedback from leadership and some of the existing web editors, the team is reformulating the previously offered monthly web trainings. The new format will provide one-on-one trainings and hands-on learning via working sessions.
