Update: Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) COVID-19 vaccine requirement
In early December 2021, the WVU Health System announced that it would pause its COVID-19 vaccine requirement for employees and other healthcare workers, as two federal district courts issued orders that temporarily prohibited the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) from enforcing its new requirement that all healthcare providers – including health systems, hospitals, and clinics – vaccinate their employees against COVID-19 as a condition of participating in the Medicare and Medicaid programs.
Former Department of Pediatrics chair Bonita Stanton remembered
Bonita “Bonnie” Stanton, a former chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the West Virginia University School of Medicine, passed away on Jan. 19, 2022. She was 69 years old. During her time at WVU, she also chaired the School of Medicine Strategic Planning Advisory Board of Research and the Clinical Studies Internal Grant Program from 1999 until she joined the Wayne State University School of Medicine in 2002.
HSC update: Student Activity Center to be closed
The Student Activity Center will be closed beginning Friday, January 21, to be used for N-95 mask fit testing for three weeks. An announcement will be released when the center is set to reopen for student use.
Physical Therapy student awarded Catherine Worthingham Fellows APTA scholarship
Alexandra Arnoldy, a second-year student in the West Virginia University Physical Therapy program, was recently awarded a scholarship to attend the American Physical Therapy Association’s Combined Section Meeting that takes place Feb. 2 to 5 in San Antonio, Texas.
New contact information for HSC Financial Aid Office
The HSC Financial Aid Office is changing its contact information. The HSC vanity email account will no longer be used; requests must be sent through the WVU Hub ticketing system.

WVU in the News: Aromatherapy may reduce anxiety, pain in oculoplastic surgery
In patients who had oculoplastic surgery with monitored anesthesia sedation, aromatherapy may be associated with less anxiety and pain, according to a presenter at the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting.
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology updates name
As of Dec. 17, 2021, the WVU Board of Governors has approved a new name for a longstanding department. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is now the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences.
