Emily Kuykendall
I feel that WVU has prepared me to go into the nursing field as a competent nurse. Working with different populations throughout school in different areas has helped me gain experience that has given me the confidence that I will succeed outside of school.
What made you consider nursing as a program of study?
Growing up around healthcare professionals in my family helped get the passion for helping others started. I’ve always been drawn to healthcare and love the challenge it presents because you are constantly learning something new.
Why did you choose WVU School of Nursing?
I chose WVU because it was close to home for me, and it was a fantastic program to be a part of. Other students in the program spoke highly of it.
Could you share a positive experience from your time at the SON?
Being a part of the WVU SON has been nothing but positive experiences. On the Keyser Campus, there are smaller class sizes, so we’re like a big family, and we’ve been able to grow close to each other throughout our time together. Dr. Shapiro has always been there for us, supported us, and guided us through every step of this journey.
What’s one piece of advice you would give your freshman self?
I would tell my freshman self that everything is going to work out and not to be so hard on myself. I am my own worst critic, and it is important not to dwell on mistakes and continue looking forward.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to accept a position in long-term care. I also plan to spend more time with my family, especially my little boy.
How do you feel WVU prepared you for your next chapter?
I feel that WVU has prepared me to go into the nursing field as a competent nurse. Working with different populations throughout school in different areas has helped me gain experience that has given me the confidence that I will succeed outside of school.
